Encouragement

The verses from Luke 11:9-13 in the New Living Translation tell me that if we ask for God's guidance we shall receive it. Therefore if we keep on seeking by studying our Bible we will find the answers to all our questions.

We need to seek and knock on God's word the Bible and God himself will open the door to us. This passage applies in my life to keep searching for God and let him know what we need--like guidance and encouragement--upon all other things through prayer, he will listen to us and we shall receive.

Knowing Love is Knowing God

Wednesday, May 12, 2010 by Contest Participant
Everyone wants to know love. So just learning that God is love in 1 John 4:7-10 in the New Living Translation encourages me to get to know God better!

I'm also a new mother of a son named Darius. How much clearer I can now understand God's sacrifice to send His Son to die for my sins. Now that's love!

But what I think God is teaching me in this passage is to imitate His love more than I do. If I really know God, it is seen through my ability to love. This is what I must work on, and I can start by loving my family members; by showing them God's love and loving them myself even when they are being difficult and seemingly unlovable.

The verses from 1 Chronicles 28:8-10 in the New Living Translation tell me that Solomon had it all given to him, a throne, riches, godly wisdom, but it wasn't enough.

Though Solomon's father David was a man after God's own heart, one who longed to truly know God and loved to be in His house, Solomon had to choose for himself. Would he apply himself to truly know the God of David, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob? Would he serve him with all of his passion and might? No, we find out later that Solomon left the purity of worshipping the One True God, marrying women who demanded their right to bring idols and gods from their home countries.

A life set on God. That's what I want. These things must be committed to and planned beforehand. Nothing...not fears, not friends, not anything must find its way between us and God. Protected, nurtured and cherished, a life in God requires constant care and commitment of time and affection. And what is the treasure? If we seek him, we will find him. Oh, how He longs to found by those set on seeking His wonderful face.

Why I Can Love Others

Tuesday, May 11, 2010 by Contest Participant
The verses from 1 John 4:7-10 in the New Living Translation tell me I can love others because God loved me enough to send His only begotten Son to earth to live and die for my sins.

I am a sinner saved by grace. The more I know about God and what He did and continues to do for me, the more I can love others.

I was abused as a child by a close family member and was psychologically tormented for many years as a result. After I became a child of God I forgave that person and a heavy burden was lifted from my heart and mind. Although it has not been completely erased from my mind, I am at peace with my past. I give glory, honor and praise for the love of God. Because of Him I can love others.

I HAVE A LIVING GOD

The verses from Daniel 3:16-18 in the New Living Translation tell me to build my faith and confidience in God and not on mortal human being like King Nebbuchadnezzar.

The verses help me to stand the test of time in my Christain journey. God taught me through the verses to be afraid of him who has the power to kill and cast into the unquencheable fire where soul died not but live eternally with the devil.

These passages encouraged me so much when I made the greatest restitution in my life, now here is the testimony:

It all happened affer my secondary school days that passout of school without good result.  All I got was failure and with that I have no hope and future, and in order to survive I was deceived by the devil to forge my result then to enable secure good job and because when you are trying to cover one sin it will lead to another.

In fact, having secured job, I also went ahead and used it for admission into higher school of learning.  But on that fateful day, after rendering songs in a retreat, my heart was brooken and I had a voice behind me asking me "where will I spend eternity if I do not cleanup my dirty life?"

It was at this juncture I wept and then resolved to make my restitution.I summoned up courage after reading Daniel 3:16-18 to go to my employer to ask for forgiveness but instead of jugdment the Lord granted mercy and pardon.

I also went to the college to make confession which ordinarily is humanly impossible, but God granted me favor and I was pardoned.  I was discharged and acquitted from 21 years jail.  Because I refused to fear purnishment but rather chose to obey God like the three Hebrew children, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego my God whom I serve set me free, and Iam free indeed.

So if only you can trust, have confidence in him that he will not fail you.  Automatically "He wll not fail."

Selfless Love

Saturday, May 8, 2010 by Contest Participant
The verses from 1 John 4:7-10 in the New Living Translation tell me love is not a feeling, but rather a choice, a choice that requires an action as 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 shows.

Our love was born unto us through God.  He is the source of our love. He loved us enough to sacrifice His Son for us. Jesus is our example of love.  He shows us what it means to love and how to love, for in His life and death we find a supremely selfless and perfect love.

The Holy Spirit gives us the power to choose to love.  He lives in our hearts and moulds our hearts to make them like our Lord's.  John said, "God Is Love" and not "Love is God," for God was and is the the creator of love (of the purest form).

God's love is holy, its just and it is perfect. God created us because He loves us His children.  He cares because He loves us (sin and all), God gives us a free choice because he wants us to lovingly choose Him above all.  He chose to sacrifice His only Son as a loving and final solution to the problem of the sin that we all go through each day of our lives.  God loves us so much that He wants us to receive eternal life. God's love expresses itself to us and in us forever.

Agape Love

Friday, May 7, 2010 by Contest Participant
I love the verses from 1 John 4:7-10 in the New Living Translation because they speak to my heart. They reinforce that fact that we can know God!

As a teenager in school, two teachers told me that there is no way anyone can "know" if there really is a God. I did not grow up being taught about God, but I knew He was real.

A few years earlier when I was contemplating suicide, I called out to Him for the first time, and I felt the amazing power of His love surround me and ease my pain. After that I began to seek Him, pray, and read His Word. I looked for people who were hurting and being mistreated. I found that a simple hug, or word of encouragement motivated by the love of God causes people to hope, smile, trust, gain strength and courage, and begin to heal broken hearts.

There was a girl in that school who was schizophrenic. People constantly put her down, walked quickly past her, and scratched terrible notes about her on the desks. No one listened to her or talked to her with any respect, only disgust and contempt. She always smelled like urine and her hair was very thin from falling out or from her pulling it. If I had never experienced the agape love of God, I may never have done a thing.

God began to urge me to reach out to her. I purposely found every rotten message on a desk about her and smudged it out. I even wrote something nice over it at times. Then I found every opportunity I could to give her a hug and spend time with her to encourage. If I heard someone try to hurt her, I cut them off and changed the subject. By the end of the year I witnessed the love of God working in her! Some of her hair even started growing back!
It wasn't until later that I was told of the sad chain of events that caused her to become schizophrenic. She had not become that way until after her father abused her at a young age. The love of God through Jesus Christ has the power to set us free! There is no teacher then, now, or ever that will convince me that you can not know God!

This is how 1 John 4:7-10 in the New Living Translation encourages me; that even when people say you can't know God, they can never overpower the love God gave us through Jesus' sacrifice! As God has loved us, we can now know Him and also love! And His love in us changes lives! God's love is agape. He knows every heart and everyone's story. God's love made me sensitive to others and continually compels me to want more of Him and to let His life and love flow out of me. I know His love is powerful enough to protect and conquer evil.

What the Holy Spirit is teaching me in this scripture is what real love is. God's love is that He loved us first. He didn't need fifty reasons first. Because He IS love! And that He sent His own perfect and beautiful Son as a sacrifice for our ugly sins! That is so powerful!

What I am learning from this passage is that being "right" is not important anymore, because I don't have a righteousness of my own anyway! What is important is that I love the way Jesus loves because it will point people to Him, and He can take away their sins!

The way 1 John 4:7-10 applies to my everyday life is that it makes me think about how I am treating others, especially the ones who are "hard" to love. To portray the character of God, I must love them first! I must lay down my rights, pride and my life for them. This is how God's love took away our sins.

The Bible also says love covers a multitude of sins. It was out of His mercy He forgave me and His love that He accepts me! I am His child and I want to apply this scripture to my heart every day so others may know Him too! Every day I want to know and recieve more of His love. I want to always be prepared because you never know when laying your life down for someone will save a life! I might be in the most unlikely and difficult place, but it is the most eternal thing we can do here. To love one another!

NEW CLOTHES

Wednesday, May 5, 2010 by Contest Participant
The verses from Galatians 3:26-29 in the New Living Translation tell me that the putting on of "new clothes" through Baptism is a special promise.

As a mother, once a year we would set out to purchase new clothes for school. It was important for the children to have a least one new outfit to begin a new school year in. It made them feel good about a few things. To put on new clothes signaled a new beginning. It said someone cared about them, loved them. It gave them confidence to step into the world of a new challenge.

Putting on Christ is very much the same. It tells me He Loves Me. Oh, and that there is a new beginning - - which  we all need at some time in our lives. When we put on those new clothes, we can have that new beginning every single day.

Those clothes remind me of what He did to show His Love for me. It gives me the confidence to face the challenges of each new day.

See through Gods eyes.

The verses from Galatians 3:26-29 in the New Living Translation tell me it does not matter what nationality, color, background, social group, we are - - all that matters is that under God we are all the same.  When people come to God it doesn't matter what their background is, everyone has a new start, "new clothes" under God.

These verses encourage me to try and always see people through God's eyes and accept differences with grace. A friend of mine, as a teenager, spent 15 years in prison.  He recently got back in touch, which I was really happy about. I was upset for him, though ,as he has found it impossible to join a church because when people find out about his background they withdraw.

This person is full of love for God, he has made a new start. I know him, and his situation encourages me to look deeper and to search out those who find it difficult to integrate. Ive found that if one person accepts a person, others will follow.

None of us are better than another, and only God is to be our judge.

Love is a Verb

Wednesday, May 5, 2010 by Contest Participant
The verses from 1 John 4:7-10 in the New Living Translation tell me the importance of love as Christ exemplifies it. God's word not only tell us that we are loved, but Jesus Christ himself lived and demonstrated how to love.

Love is an action. In today's world of busy schedules, selfishness and economic decline, we find people under pressure, in a hurry and often angry. Now, more than ever, we can sow the seeds of love with a smile, a kind word, or a listening ear. Do not repay evil for evil. Turn the other cheek and sow a blessing.  Love is unconditional. Hate the sin, love the sinner. We are all sinners and will stand before God, so judge not. Live a life demonstrating love. Ask the Holy Spirit to empower you.

When my husband left me, it was the Holy Spirit that took over and helped me to love unconditionally. This was obvious as I found that I was able to speak softly and be non-confrontational. I was able to demonstrate love by praying for him, and for me, as we both needed to change and allow the Holy Spirit to work in us. After a year and a half of being apart, we are back together and working on the Love Dare and Financial Peace University.

I could never have loved through this tragedy if it wasn't for the love of God and the Holy Spirit's work. Love has become an action word as we both work on what we say, and how we say things, to each other. As we work on lifting one another up with kind greetings and encouragement, we find that kindness has become contagious and we have more smiles and positives to share with the rest of the world around us. As a result, we are experiencing Christ's love in action.

My Faithful Friend, My Rescuer

Wednesday, May 5, 2010 by Contest Participant
The verses from Daniel 3:16-18 in the New Living Translation tell me of God's faithfulness to those who remain obedient to HIM. It encourages me to be hopeful in the midst of extreme disappointments.

My husband left me in 1999 with three children, a difficult divorce for me personally because I have been mostly a stay-at-home mother. Then my father died in 2002, whom I had not seen in eight years and never saw him even before his burial back home in the Philippines due to financial difficulties. I was diagnosed with Graves Disease, which left me unable to work for almost two years.

My oldest son went through divorce and is now living with me again. I have not found a job since November 2008 and my age being 57 makes me think that my age is not helping either. My son's hours at work have also been reduced, plus he only works three times a week for 5-6 hours a day. My youngest daughter had her own challenges, but she has become stronger because of it.

My life has been difficult since the divorce. I believe that this has been my desert. It has been a long 11 years and 3 months. I am still single - - divorce is still very painful for me. I am trying, through God's grace, to live a life of purity for the LORD. And I thank HIM for that I serve at my church in different capacities, never missed a Sunday, and am leading a Bible Study.

I do this despite the difficulties and the disappointments in my life. Even my two children tell me that I have been praying for these many years and been faithful to the LORD, but nothing has changed. It is very painful because I feel that I have let my children down.  My own family back home, whom I have not seen for sixteen years now, agree. However, I answer them that it is going to be in God's time, not ours. I believe that one day HE is going to rescue me from this situation to show to my children and to the world HIS faithfulness and HIS mercies which will bring glory to HIS kingdom!

Remember My Words

The verses from Luke 11:9-13 in the New Living Translation tell me that God truely loves us, knows us and wants what is best for us.

This passage speaks to me during this difficult time of my life when an answer to prayer is a constant yearning. Waiting with patience is difficult and can make you doubt your faith. As a loving mother of three sons and one daughter, I have been struggling with the choices my daughter has made. She has recently had a beautiful son with a married man with two other children who has a recent violent history with the law. He is, of course, not our choice of a son-in-law.

Our daughter, unfortunately, loves him and this has put great strain on our family. We try to have the heart of forgiveness, but know he will never be the loving father and husband of almost thirty years I have been blessed with.

This passage reminds me to be constant in my prayers, knowing blessing and protection abound in God's love. When I hold my beautiful grandson I am reminded of God's miracles and hold fast to His truths. Waiting in such difficult, fearful and trying times is tiring but I know God holds our family in his love and our daughter, Grace, has been given the perfect name. God's grace has saved her during a three week hospital stay after emergency surgery on her first bithday despite the multiple near death moments. He has allowed her to have an uneventful pregnency, despite the use of only one kidney from this childhood surgery. He has delivered a healthy boy, despite the near death dellivery of our grandson.

He will, of course, continue to give us hidden blessings, despite our doubts and bless our family with love and forgiveness. He does love us, and will give us what he has promised - - His love and blessings, even if we are unable to recognize them at the time.

I AM LIFTED UP BY THE LORD!

Friday, April 30, 2010 by Contest Participant
The verses from Daniel 3:16-18 in the New Living Translation tell me that I can always held my head up high and find joy, even in times of persecution.

Six years ago, my life was turned upside down. I was estranged with my family, jobless, financially incapacitated, sick and had broken friendships. This is the time when I begin to accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I wasn't thrown into the blazing furnace literally, but what I walked,  saw, and felt was like burning fire everywhere.

The most painful of it all was that the people whom you thought are behind you - - my family - - became my accusers. I don't know why God allowed it to happen, but I am thankful that He rescued me every day of my life. As my husband and I say, we live each day one at a time. Then, as the days, months, and years progress, as I continue to profess that God is my defender and that no weapon formed against me shall prosper, relationships have been restored.

I am healthy now, and financially able. God has caused people to go out of their way to help us. As I look back, it is not by my strength or might that I was lifted up from that situation. I praise God that He didn't just  rescue me from my circumstances, but He saved me so I can have an eternal life.

The Open Door

Thursday, April 29, 2010 by Contest Participant
The verses from Luke 11:9-13 in the New Living Translation tell me that Jesus has always been there, ready to open the door to my heart.

For my tenth Christmas my parents gave me a beautiful leather bound Bible with my name engraved in gold. My Bible wasn't a child's Bible with little girl pictures, but it had some beautiful paintings throughout to illustrate God's love. At least this is how I preceived each picture. One picture was of Jesus standing at the door with the most beautiful, calming expression on his face. It was illustrating Luke's scripture of Jesus seeking to enter our heart.

In January, on a cold, snowy Sunday night I walked down the aisle of our Baptist church and asked Jesus to come into my heart. My parents weren't even in attendance that night, but I knew Jesus was my Savior. I loved my Bible, it felt so good and I would run my hands down the gold edges. I always sought out the "Jesus at the Door" and a beautiful picture of Jesus with his arms outspread to enfold me in an embrace.

This passage has been a touchstone for me, but I wish I could say that the door always remained open. I am now in my seventies and there have been times when the door was closed between Christ and myself. Never was the door closed by my Savior, but my stubborn pride, life wanderings, and sin would surface and the door would be closed. Each time I strayed and found my way back to ask for forgiveness, I would find Jesus patiently waiting by the door. He never gave up on me, even though I didn't deserve his forgiveness.

As a parent and grandparent I pray that each of my loved ones will find their way to the door. My two young grandsons are being brought up in the church and I see their loving acceptance of Christ already. I know they may also lose their way at times, and tell them about the door.

I don't have my first Bible anymore. I passed it down to one daughter, but I shared my favorite picture with her. Now I just try to daily leave my children in God's hands. I don't need to look at the pictures anymore. They are forever etched in my mind as clear as they were for that little ten year old girl who used to run her hands across Christ's face.

Falling Down to Find God

Tuesday, April 27, 2010 by Contest Participant
The verses from Luke 11:9-13 in the New Living Translation tell me that the path to spiritual growth is a lifelong walk.

When I first read this verse, I though "Eureka!" If I just ask God to give me what I want, I would have it. Several years later after infidelity in my marriage, having a child with autism, I would ask God.  I prayed for a good marriage, a healthy child, why did I receive the opposite?

Sometimes, I would reread this passage in tears, confusion and finally, I must admit anger.  I decided that this passage was what atheist would validate as cognitve dissonance.

Assured of my intellectual superiority, my Bible gathered dust for some time. My pathway into agnosticism was not a happy venture. In my heart, I still believed in God, I just did not believe God had any interest or hand in my life.

One day, I decided to start reading the Bible again. As I reread Luke 11:9-13, it dawned on me that I had not understood the true meaning of this passage. I had kept asking why the bad marriage, why the child with autism and eventually God was giving me answers. God led my husband and I to a better marriage, when I was confused about what care I should seek for my son, the answers were provided.

God is not a celestial Santa Claus. We may not receive the answers as we would like but God does answer us and continue to love us!

Love Releases Pain

Sunday, April 25, 2010 by Contest Participant
The verses from 1 John 4:7-10 in the New Living Translation tell me that despite having a dysfunctional childhood, I have to love those who caused me a great deal of pain in the past.

Through the years, I was unable to heal for I was unable to fully love. My mind was set more on the pain than the realization of love. I often thought I could never love those who hurt me. I believed it was truly an act that I could not conquer towards those who hurt me. One day the Lord opened my eyes to see the many ways I had hurt him in my towards and/or actions. It was then that I realized that to heal from the past, I had to love those who hurt me.

The Lord also opened my heart to see that those who tried to destroy and hurt me were not healed from their pain. They needed to understand the Lord more. In loving them, they may one day have their eyes open to feel the love of the Lord and others. I know I may not be able to change their ways, but by them seeing the Lord work in me, they can see what peace is and seek to have it in their life.

Knowing God Means Loving Others

Friday, April 23, 2010 by Contest Participant
The verses from 1 John 4:7-10 in the New Living Translation tell me that when we enter into a relationship with God, we also enter into a relationship with His family.

This is a real challenge as not all of God's children are or act lovable. However, Jesus did not choose to only call those who were lovable, but those who were unlovable--sinners.  Jesus chose to die for us when we were in that state. He now calls us, through John, to do the same.

God is teaching us that as hard as it might be, as strongly as we might disagree with others views on politics or even theology, we must love each other and treat each other as HE loves us.

Stand Faithful and Focused

Thursday, April 22, 2010 by Contest Participant
The verses from Daniel 3:16-18 in the New Living Translation tell me a story of three men who were not able to be swayed from their foundation of faith.

I am encouraged by Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego because they were willing to face losing their lives with no fear. Their faith in God was so strong that they knew he was in control and nothing could separate them from his care and protection. They were not afraid to make a public proclamation of their faith and God kept them and protected them because of their actions.

This passage is a continual reminder to me that I must live the faith that I profess. Stories from the Bible such as this one have allowed me to grow up in my faith from a child and I have been blessed to know that God is in control for many years. However, having the knowledge and living the knowledge are two different things. I have had the knowledge in my head from a very young age but only in the last 5-7 years have I been able to live the knowledge with my heart.

Through tough times and trials that have come God has taught me to rest in him and remain focused on him and not the trial. It is when I focus on him that I am able to emerge from my fiery furnace free of smoke damage. I also have learned that when I remain focused on God and emerge from those trials I have the opportunity to share my faith with others. Many times people who have been present for some of my worst trials and tribulations can not believe what I have endured and that I didn't just give up. That is when God receives the ultimate Glory! I can give him all the credit and then just bask in his love a care and know that I don't have to worry. God is in control and he will show himself faithful as long as I remain faithful and focused on him.

Daily Walking Closer To My Lord God

Thursday, April 22, 2010 by Contest Participant
The verses from 1 Chronicles 28:8-10 in the New Living Translation tell me King David was urging his son, Solomon, to seek the LORD God with a totally committed heart.

In my own personal walk with the LORD for the last 44 years, God showed me immediately after I gave my heart to Him, that I should seek Him with an undivided heart; specifically seeking wisdom, knowledge and understanding.

I had been a church member for about 17 years, but did not know the LORD God as my personal Savior until shortly after my 29th birthday. I shall never forget the joy and peace which flooded my whole being when I surrendered my heart to the King of Kings!

David gave his son Solomon instructions to get to know "the God of your ancestors---serve Him with your whole heart and a willing mind." At the very beginning, God gave me a deep thirst for His Word.

The New Living Translation opens the Word to my heart, clearly and succinctly. For so many years, bible translators have sought to improve the language style of our current day, yet to keep it completely true to the original meaning of each passage, from Genesis 1:1 to and including Revelation 22:21. This particular passage is one which each of us must receive and diligently renew daily into our heart and mind. The following passage has been very meaningful in my heart and life: "The Lord sees every heart and knows every plan and thought. If you seek him, you will find him."

Every thought in our minds and intent of our heart is known to God. This passage should be indelibly imprinted on our heart and followed daily. Oh that my willful spirit would be submissive to my Father, in every moment of every day.
